Avery L7163 in Microsoft Word, step by step

  1. Open the Labels dialog

For L7163 labels, open a blank Word document, go to the Mailings tab and click Labels, then Options. Set the printer type (page printers covers laser and inkjet) before you look for L7163.

  2. Pick L7163 from the list

Under Label vendors choose “Avery A4/A5” and select L7163 in Product number. Label information should read 3.81 cm high and 9.91 cm wide, and Details shows 2 across × 7 down; product lists differ between Word versions.

  3. Or create L7163 as a new label

If L7163 is not listed, click New Label, name it “L7163 LabelGrid” and enter: Top margin 1.52 cm, Side margin 0.47 cm, Vertical pitch 3.81 cm, Horizontal pitch 10.16 cm, Label height 3.81 cm, Label width 9.91 cm, Number across 2, Number down 7, Page size A4 (210 × 297 mm). Word keeps the custom label for next time (in current versions it appears under the Other/Custom vendor).

  4. Fill the labels

Back in Labels, type the L7163 text once and pick “Full page of the same label” for 14 copies, or click New Document to get an empty 2 × 7 table of 14 cells to fill one by one.

  5. Mail merge a list onto L7163

For a list, use Mailings › Start Mail Merge › Labels with the same L7163 settings, then Select Recipients › Use an Existing List (an Excel or comma-separated file), insert the merge fields in the first L7163 label, click Update Labels to copy them to the other 13 and Finish & Merge.

  6. Print L7163 at 100 %

Print on A4 paper with no “scale to paper size” option, then hold a plain-paper test behind the L7163 sheet against a window: all 2 columns should sit 0.47 cm from the edge.

Worked example: 49 labels on L7163

Your list has 49 rows, so Finish & Merge fills 4 pages of 14 Avery L7163 labels and leaves the last 7 labels of page 4 empty. Keep that sheet: next time add 7 blank rows at the top of the list so Word starts on label 8.

In the LabelGrid designer the same 49 rows go into merge mode; the free version prints the first 14 (one full L7163 sheet) and Pro removes the limit. To reuse a part-used sheet, set the start position to the first empty label.

When L7163 labels print out of line in Microsoft Word

  • Word may warn that the L7163 margins are outside the printable area of the page. Continue without letting Word fix the margins (the button names differ between versions): the 0.47 cm side margin is narrow, but the 9.91 cm labels sit inside it.
  • A blank second page appears after the L7163 table: Word always keeps a paragraph mark after a table; select it and set its font size to 1 pt so all 7 rows stay on one page.
  • Text cut off on the first or last L7163 row: many printers leave about 1/4″ (6 mm) unprinted, and L7163 has 15.2 mm at the top and 15.2 mm at the bottom, so keep Microsoft Word text 1.8 mm inside each label.

About the Avery L7163 sheet

Avery® L7163 (mailing labels) has 14 labels of 99.1 × 38.1 mm per A4 sheet. The same layout is sold under other Avery codes too (J8163), so these settings work for them as well.

Frequently asked questions

Does Word have an Avery L7163 template?

Word's built-in list normally has L7163 under the “Avery A4/A5” vendor in Mailings › Labels › Options, but the list differs between versions. If yours does not, New Label with 1.52 cm top margin, 0.47 cm side margin and 2 × 7 labels gives the same layout.

What are the measurements of Avery L7163?

14 labels of 99.1 mm × 38.1 mm on A4, 2 across and 7 down. In Word's New Label dialog that is a 1.52 cm top margin, 0.47 cm side margin and 10.16 cm × 3.81 cm pitch.

Why do my L7163 labels from Microsoft Word drift down the page?

Either the Vertical pitch is not 3.81 cm or the print dialog scaled the page; at 97 % the last row moves about 8.5 mm. Print at 100 %.

Can I skip Microsoft Word entirely?

Yes. The LabelGrid designer at the top of this page is set to Avery L7163: type one label or paste a list and download a PDF aligned to all 14 positions, free and in your browser.
