Avery L7160 in Microsoft Word, step by step

  1. Open the Labels dialog

For L7160 labels, open a blank Word document, go to the Mailings tab and click Labels, then Options. Set the printer type (page printers covers laser and inkjet) before you look for L7160.

  2. Pick L7160 from the list

Under Label vendors choose “Avery A4/A5” and select L7160 in Product number. Label information should read 3.81 cm high and 6.35 cm wide, and Details shows 3 across × 7 down; product lists differ between Word versions.

  3. Or create L7160 as a new label

If L7160 is not listed, click New Label, name it “L7160 LabelGrid” and enter: Top margin 1.52 cm, Side margin 0.72 cm, Vertical pitch 3.81 cm, Horizontal pitch 6.6 cm, Label height 3.81 cm, Label width 6.35 cm, Number across 3, Number down 7, Page size A4 (210 × 297 mm). Word keeps the custom label for next time (in current versions it appears under the Other/Custom vendor).

  4. Fill the labels

Back in Labels, type the L7160 text once and pick “Full page of the same label” for 21 copies, or click New Document to get an empty 3 × 7 table of 21 cells to fill one by one.

  5. Mail merge a list onto L7160

For a list, use Mailings › Start Mail Merge › Labels with the same L7160 settings, then Select Recipients › Use an Existing List (an Excel or comma-separated file), insert the merge fields in the first L7160 label, click Update Labels to copy them to the other 20 and Finish & Merge.

  6. Print L7160 at 100 %

Print on A4 paper with no “scale to paper size” option, then hold a plain-paper test behind the L7160 sheet against a window: all 3 columns should sit 0.72 cm from the edge.

Worked example: 100 address labels on L7160

Your list has 100 rows, so Finish & Merge fills 5 pages of 21 Avery L7160 labels and leaves the last 5 labels of page 5 empty. Keep that sheet: next time add 16 blank rows at the top of the list so Word starts on label 17.

In the LabelGrid designer the same 100 rows go into merge mode; the free version prints the first 21 (one full L7160 sheet) and Pro removes the limit. To reuse a part-used sheet, set the start position to the first empty label.

When L7160 labels print out of line in Microsoft Word

  • Word may warn that the L7160 margins are outside the printable area of the page. Continue without letting Word fix the margins (the button names differ between versions): the 0.72 cm side margin is narrow, but the 6.35 cm labels sit inside it.
  • A blank second page appears after the L7160 table: Word always keeps a paragraph mark after a table; select it and set its font size to 1 pt so all 7 rows stay on one page.
  • If every L7160 label printed from Microsoft Word is off by the same amount, the printer feeds off-centre: add the measured offset to the 15.2 mm top or 7.2 mm side margin, or use the LabelGrid printer offset.

Frequently asked questions

Does Word have an Avery L7160 template?

Word's built-in list normally has L7160 under the “Avery A4/A5” vendor in Mailings › Labels › Options, but the list differs between versions. If yours does not, New Label with 1.52 cm top margin, 0.72 cm side margin and 3 × 7 labels gives the same layout.

What are the measurements of Avery L7160?

21 labels of 63.5 mm × 38.1 mm on A4, 3 across and 7 down. In Word's New Label dialog that is a 1.52 cm top margin, 0.72 cm side margin and 6.6 cm × 3.81 cm pitch.

Why do my L7160 labels from Microsoft Word drift down the page?

Either the Vertical pitch is not 3.81 cm or the print dialog scaled the page; at 97 % the last row moves about 8.5 mm. Print at 100 %.

Can I skip Microsoft Word entirely?

Yes. The LabelGrid designer at the top of this page is set to Avery L7160: type one label or paste a list and download a PDF aligned to all 21 positions, free and in your browser.
