The best sheet for name tag labels
Name tags for parties, classrooms and kids' belongings: from big stick-on tags to small labels for lunch boxes and water bottles. Avery 5395 puts 8 labels on one US Letter sheet in 2 columns and 4 rows, which is why it is the default for name tag labels here.
Each label is 3 3/8″ (85.7 mm) wide and 2 1/3″ (59.3 mm) tall, with a 9/16″ (14.3 mm) top margin and a 11/16″ (17.5 mm) side margin on the sheet. The longest line of the first sample row, “Mia”, has 3 characters; at 10 pt one label holds about 13 lines of 46 characters, at 8 pt about 16 lines of 58.
Compared with 5395: Avery 5163 has the same label area and 10 instead of 8 labels per sheet and Avery 5160 has 33 % of the label area and 30 instead of 8 labels per sheet. Pick the larger labels when your people need bigger type, the smaller ones when you print many.

Tips for printing name tag labels
- One name per label, centred and large, reads best from a distance.
- For kids' belongings, add a phone number on a second line instead of a full address.
- Labels on lunch boxes and bottles survive longer when they go on a smooth, dry surface.
- Table or team numbers on name tags make seating at events easier.

Frequently asked questions
What size are name tag labels?
LabelGrid's default for name tag labels is 2 1/3″ × 3 3/8″ (Avery 5395, 8 per sheet). Other sheets that fit: Avery 5163 at 2″ × 4″ and Avery 5160 at 1″ × 2 5/8″.
How many name tag labels fit on one sheet?
8 on Avery 5395, 10 on Avery 5163 and 30 on Avery 5160. For 40 people at 1 label each you need 5 sheets of Avery 5395.
Can I print name tag labels from a spreadsheet list?
Yes. Switch the designer to merge mode, paste your rows with a header (Name) and each row becomes one label; placeholders like {Name} pull the values in. The free version prints one full sheet per list.
Why do my name tag labels print out of line?
Check the print dialog first: “fit to page” or any scale other than 100 % shrinks the sheet, and the labels drift. Choose “Actual size” or 100 % scale, the right paper (US Letter) and no “fit to page”. If every label is off by the same amount, use the printer offset in the designer to nudge the whole sheet.
