How to print Avery® 5163 labels in Apple Pages

Apple Pages has no Avery 5163 template, so either print the aligned PDF from the designer below or build a 3-column table: 0.5 in top and 0.162 in left document margins, 4 in columns and 2 in rows.

Avery 5163 in Apple Pages, step by step

  1. Fastest: print an aligned PDF

Pages does not ship an Avery 5163 template. Make the 5163 labels in the designer at the top of this page, download the PDF and print it from Preview with Scale set to 100 %.

  2. Set up the document

To build the 5163 layout in Pages, create a Blank word-processing document. In the Document sidebar choose US Letter paper, turn off header and footer, and set the document margins: top 0.5 in, bottom 0, left 0.162 in, right 0.15 in. The bottom margin stays at 0 on purpose: the 5 table rows already place every label, and the empty paragraph that always follows a table then fits in the 0.5 in below the last row instead of starting a blank second page.

  3. Add a 3-column table

Click Table in the toolbar, then give the 5163 grid 3 columns and 5 rows (use the handles at the table's edges or the Table menu) and set header and footer rows to none in the Table tab of the Format sidebar; the even columns are spacers between the 2 label columns.

  4. Enter the exact sizes

Select the columns, then in the Format sidebar's Table tab, under Row & Column Size, set the widths to 4 in, 0.188 in, 4 in and the row height to 2 in for every row. Turn the table outline and gridlines off in the same tab.

  5. Fill the 10 cells

Type into each cell (about 10 lines at 10 pt fit) and copy finished cells to the other 5163 positions. For address lists, the macOS Contacts app can also print mailing labels from a contact group with Avery layouts in its print dialog.

  6. Print 5163 at 100 %

File › Print with US Letter paper and 100 % scaling; on a plain-paper test the 2 columns of 5163 should start 0.162 in from the left edge.

Worked example: 50 shipping labels on 5163

One Pages table holds 10 Avery 5163 labels, so 50 labels need 5 pages: duplicate the page with the table 4 times. Check that each copy still starts 0.5 in from the top.

In the LabelGrid designer the same 50 rows go into merge mode; the free version prints the first 10 (one full 5163 sheet) and Pro removes the limit. To reuse a part-used sheet, set the start position to the first empty label.

When 5163 labels print out of line in Apple Pages

  • The 5163 table grows past the page: a cell has more text than its 2 in height allows; Pages enlarges the row instead of clipping, so cut a line or shrink the type.
  • Preview prints the PDF smaller than the 5163 sheet: in the print dialog choose Scale 100 % instead of “Scale to fit”.
  • If every 5163 label printed from Apple Pages is off by the same amount, the printer feeds off-centre: add the measured offset to the 0.5 in top or 0.162 in side margin, or use the LabelGrid printer offset.

Either a table row grew past 2 in or Preview scaled the page; at 97 % the last row moves about 0.315 in. Print at 100 %.
