How to print Avery® 5163 labels in LibreOffice Writer

Avery 5163 in LibreOffice Writer, step by step

Open the Labels dialog
In LibreOffice Writer, choose File › New › Labels; the dialog has Labels, Format and Options tabs, and all three matter for 5163.

Pick the 5163 template
On the Labels tab, choose the Brand “Avery Letter Size” and look for 5163 in Type. Brand and type lists vary by version; if 5163 is missing, use the next step.

Or enter 5163 by hand
On the Format tab enter the 5163 values: Horizontal pitch 4.188 in, Vertical pitch 2 in, Width 4 in, Height 2 in, Left margin 0.162 in, Top margin 0.5 in, Columns 2, Rows 5, Page width 8.5 in, Page height 11 in; save it for next time.

Edit once, copy to all
On the Options tab tick Synchronize contents and click New Document. Edit the top-left 5163 label, then click Synchronize Labels to copy it to all 10.

Merge a spreadsheet
For one 5163 label per row, pick your registered spreadsheet under Database and Table on the Labels tab and insert its fields; when you print, LibreOffice asks whether to print a form letter: answer Yes.

File › Print: paper US Letter, no “fit to page” scaling; a plain-paper test should show 5 rows of 5163 labels 2 in apart.
Worked example: 50 shipping labels on 5163
A merge of 50 rows prints 5 pages of 10 Avery 5163 labels. Preview the first page before sending all 5 to the printer.
In the LabelGrid designer the same 50 rows go into merge mode; the free version prints the first 10 (one full 5163 sheet) and Pro removes the limit. To reuse a part-used sheet, set the start position to the first empty label.

When 5163 labels print out of line in LibreOffice Writer
- 5163 labels print on the wrong paper size: check Format › Page Style matches US Letter; LibreOffice may default to your locale's paper.
- Only the first 5163 label changed: Synchronize contents was off. Open the Options tab again, tick it, and click Synchronize Labels.
- Text cut off on the first or last 5163 row: many printers leave about 1/4″ (6 mm) unprinted, and 5163 has 0.5 in at the top and 0.5 in at the bottom, so keep LibreOffice Writer text 0.125 in inside each label.
