Avery 5162 in LibreOffice Writer, step by step

  1. Open the Labels dialog

In LibreOffice Writer, choose File › New › Labels; the dialog has Labels, Format and Options tabs, and all three matter for 5162.

  2. Pick the 5162 template

On the Labels tab, choose the Brand “Avery Letter Size” and look for 5162 in Type. Brand and type lists vary by version; if 5162 is missing, use the next step.

  3. Or enter 5162 by hand

On the Format tab enter the 5162 values: Horizontal pitch 4.188 in, Vertical pitch 1.333 in, Width 4 in, Height 1.333 in, Left margin 0.156 in, Top margin 0.833 in, Columns 2, Rows 7, Page width 8.5 in, Page height 11 in; save it for next time.

  4. Edit once, copy to all

On the Options tab tick Synchronize contents and click New Document. Edit the top-left 5162 label, then click Synchronize Labels to copy it to all 14.

  5. Merge a spreadsheet

For one 5162 label per row, pick your registered spreadsheet under Database and Table on the Labels tab and insert its fields; when you print, LibreOffice asks whether to print a form letter: answer Yes.

  6. Print 5162 at 100 %

File › Print: paper US Letter, no “fit to page” scaling; a plain-paper test should show 7 rows of 5162 labels 1.333 in apart.

Worked example: 100 save the date labels on 5162

A merge of 100 rows prints 8 pages of 14 Avery 5162 labels; the last page uses 2 positions and 12 stay blank. Preview the first page before sending all 8 to the printer.

In the LabelGrid designer the same 100 rows go into merge mode; the free version prints the first 14 (one full 5162 sheet) and Pro removes the limit. To reuse a part-used sheet, set the start position to the first empty label.

When 5162 labels print out of line in LibreOffice Writer

  • 5162 labels print on the wrong paper size: check Format › Page Style matches US Letter; LibreOffice may default to your locale's paper.
  • Only the first 5162 label changed: Synchronize contents was off. Open the Options tab again, tick it, and click Synchronize Labels.
  • If every 5162 label printed from LibreOffice Writer is off by the same amount, the printer feeds off-centre: add the measured offset to the 0.833 in top or 0.156 in side margin, or use the LabelGrid printer offset.
